To inspire and enable the youth of our communities to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.
Description:
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County is a guidance-based organization for youth ranging from Kindergarten to 12th grade. Programs are designed to provide reinforcement of the skills and concepts that are being developed in school with programs that are age specific. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County offers a broad range of after school programs in five core areas: Character and Leadership Development; Education and Career Development; Fine Arts; Health and Life Skills; and Sports Fitness, and Recreation. Annual membership is $25 and financial assistance is available for those who qualify.
History:
In January 1995, a needs assessment survey was completed which indicated the Portage community was growing concerned about providing safe and positive after school programs for youth in their community. In 1996, a capital campaign was launched to build a new club in Portage. Doors to the 19,000 square feet club opened December 26, 1996. In March 2001, the club was renamed the Forrest L. "Dusty" Rhode Unit honoring the volunteer who worked diligently to rally support and secure funding to provide youth with a safe alternative to being home alone after school.
