The mission of PORTAGE ADULT EDUCATION is to provide educational opportunities for all adults, sixteen years of age or older, that will enable them to acquire basic literacy skills, a high school diploma or GED, and/or improved workplace skills necessary to successfully impact their ability to function in today's society.

Description:
Portage Adult Education offers residents of Porter County a comprehensive program which includes a fully accredited adult high school and community based learning centers. Our Porter County learning centers are located in Chesterton, Hebron, Portage, South Haven and Valparaiso. Each learning center provides free GED prepararion, GQE remediation, English language instruction and other educational needs. Our learning centers have convenient times and locations(see individual listings for local information).

History:
Portage Township Schools is a Northwest Indiana not-for-profit school corporation. In 1960, the Indiana State Legislature and the Department of Education recognized the fact that many adult Hoosiers had not completed their requirements for a high school diploma. As a response to this need, a request for program providers was sent to all school districts. Portage Township Schools, after assessing the local need, submitted an application, was accepted, and began its adult education program. In the fall of 1962, a few high school credit classes were offered in the evening. The demand for these adult secondary (ASE) services continued to grow and the number of course offerings expanded. The current adult high school diploma program offers both day and evening classes.

In 1968, the Adult Basic Education (ABE) or literacy program was added. English as a Second Language (ESL) courses were initiated in 1970. Portage Adult Education (PAE) became and official GED testing center in 1970 and preparation classes for the General Education Development (GED) examination were instituted.

The literacy program commenced its outreach into the local communities in 1974 when the adult learning center concept was established. It provided an open entry-open exit, individualized instructional program. The center was usually housed in a local facility which allowed for flexibility in the scheduling of class hours. These community based learning centers proved so successful that Portage Adult Education operates 28 sites in six Northwest Indiana counties: Porter, Jasper, Starke, Newton, and parts of Lake and La Porte. The locations are generally non-traditional including places such as banks, churches, libraries, storefronts, armories, and community halls. All centers offer initial assessment, life skill instruction/application, English as a Second Language, and GED preparation. Each center is under the direction of a certified instructor.

One of the on-going program goals of Portage Adult Education is to continue and explore new avenues in which to provide for those in need of educational services. And, since, recent research bears witness to the fact that illiteracy is an inter-generational cycle, developing family literacy programs with an inter-generational approach appeared to be the most appropriate course of action when considering future projects.

October 1992 marked the official date for the beginning of the "Project CAPABLE", an intergenerational family literacy program conceived under the premise that parents and children working together can enjoy beautiful learning experiences. A cooperative collaboration of seven (7) Porter County based organizations uniting to incorporate a family-centered approach to promote literacy development. The program is in its 11th year and has helped many young adults achieve their GED.
