Spring Valley Shelter provides shelter and supportive services to homeless households (families or individuals)as they move toward self-sufficiency.
Description:
Each household receives a private apartment, case management, life skills training, counseling, budgeting help, and other programming designed to help them address the root causes of their homelessness. A household may stay as long as needed to reach independent housing: most stays last one to four months. On April 8,2006, Spring Valley Shelter moved from its 8-household facility on Route 30 to a 28-household facility on Calumet Avenue, just north of the Walgreens.
History:
Christian Community Action of Porter County was founded in 1964. Its first program, Greenwich House, a transitional home for women with mental illnesses, still operates (462-0351). Spring Valley Shelter was started in 1991 (465-1022).
