The mission of the Open Door Health Center is to provide access to quality health services and education at no cost to citizens who are uninsured, do not have the financial means to acquire adequate healthcare, and reside in the Michigan City Area Schools district.

Description:
Individuals of all ages may receive services if they meet eligibility requirements. We only serve individuals who do not have health insurance or financial means of paying for their health care needs. Patients who are eligible for Medicaid and/or Medicare must utilize those resources to fulfill their health care needs. Medicare patients who meet income and residency guidelines may receive assistance with their medications provided that they are under the care of a physician and do not have private insurance to assist with medications.

Our commitment to providing comprehensive health care has led the Open Door to offer an array of health services. These services include the following: primary medical care, diagnostic testing, mental health counseling, health education, women's health services, medications, and social services. In order to fund these services the Open Door Health Center receives financial support from the United Way, private donations, grants, fundraising projects, and patient donations.

History:
In 1989 a small group of concerned citizens came together to address health care for individuals that had no access to medical care in our community. They solicited volunteers, equipment, funds, and a facility and opened the Open Door Health Center. We remain a volunteer based clinic today, receiving in-kind services from 163 local physicians, nurses, social workers, and lay-persons providing direct care to our patients. Since its beginning the agency has served thousands of individuals and continues to respond to the growing requests for health care assistance.
