The shelter's activities are predicated on the belief that a community can most effectively solve problems via collaboration among all of its constituents. To fulfill our mission, Gabriel's Horn will forge partnerships with every sector of the community. Our programs and services will make it possible for local businesses, other service providers, units of government, religious organizations and members of the community to work together in assisting people to permanently move into their own housing.
Description:
This is a temporary non-profit shelter whose purpose is to get our Porter County homeless clients into permanent housing. All adults are required to be working, or, participating in an educational program that will lead to full-time employment, or, have official documentation of the inability to work full-time. All school age children must attend school and do required homework. Residents will clean their own rooms and help clean and maintain common areas. Residents will be required to attend weekly shelter meetings and provide documentation regarding employment status.
History:
Since our Board was formed in March of 2003 we have gone from seven individuals with no funds, to our present position of a very active Board sheltering people and meeting their everyday needs. In less then a year the Corporation maintains two separate buildings in Portage Township, one on 700 North, which we rent and houses single males only, and one on McCool Road, which we recently purchased and houses women and couples (with /or without children). Presently we can house up to five families in the front of the McCool building and store a vast amount of furniture for our clients, when they move out, in our warehouse in the back.
Since July 30th, 2004, when the building inspector allowed us to open, and March 30th, 2005, we have housed twenty-five adults and forty-one children in our two buildings.
