To create a botanical environment that promotes world friendship through ethnic gardens, and enhances the lives of visitors by artistic, musical and nature-related educational programs.
Description:
Friendship Gardens is nestled in the Trail Creek Valley on the northeast side of Michigan City, There are a variety of habitats including forested dunes, wetlands, open sun, shade, and woodlands. Mature plantings of evergreens grace the grounds. Volunteers maintain garden plots representative of various nations. Remnants of earlier gardens dot the grounds. Lake Lucerne contains an island that was once used for musical and dramatic performances. The Gardens are open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, 10 AM to 4 PM. Admission $4.00. Special events serve educational and fund raising purposes. The gardens are a volunteer-based not-for-profit organization.
History:
The Gardens were originally an exhibit at the 1933-1934 Chicago Worlds Fair. A local physician, Dr. Warren, brought the Gardens to Michigan City in 1936. The Gardens were an important tourist attraction in the following few decades but fell into disrepair. The last decade has seen the renewal of the Gardens, primarily through the effort of volunteers. They display charm, a splendid natural setting and historical interest today.
