Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses, so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God's love and can live and grow into all that God intends.
Description:
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing organization that builds decent, affordable housing in partnership with people in need. The houses then are sold to families at no profit and with zero interest loans. Habitat for Humanity International was co-founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller. To date, almost 200,000 Habitat homes have been built world-wide, providing more than 1,000,000 people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter. Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity was established as an affiliate in 1985.
History:
As of August 2007, 132 homes have been completed. We have been fortunate to house 200+ adults and 415+ children. For each house built in Tacoma/Pierce County, $4,200 is tithed to Guatemala Habitat affiliates, building 2 homes there. The approximate house and land cost is $125,000. Our 3-bedroom house has 1050 sq. ft. Our 4-bedroom house has 1150 sq. ft. Over 1000 volunteers work with us on the work site, ReStore, and in our office each year. Volunteers drive down the cost of construction, making Habitat one of the most affordable housing ministries in the world.
