Open Hearth provides immediate emergency housing using motel vouchers to homeless families in East Pierce County (e.g. Puyallup, Sumner, Bonney Lake, Buckley, Wilkeson, Orting, Graham, Roy, Eatonville, Edgewood, Fife).
Description:
Open Hearth Ministries provides an immediate, short-term, safe place for homeless families by paying for a few nights in a Puyallup or Sumner motel. An Open Hearth volunteer visits each family in the motel to provide case management and bring emergency food. Our goal is for the family to use the temporary stability and phone provided by the motel to arrange for a place to stay after leaving the motel. We need volunteer Screeners to trade off carrying the Open Hearth cell phone and place callers in motels who meet our criteria (e.g. East Pierce County connection, have children.) We need volunteer Case Managers to visit the families in their motel room.
History:
Volunteers concerned about homelessness in the Puyallup area started Open Hearth because there are not enough shelters in Eastern Pierce County to meet the needs of the growing homeless population. Associated Ministries agreed to be our fiduciary agent so we became affiliated with Associated Ministries of Tacoma and Pierce County.
