Tahoma Audubon strives to connect people with Nature

Description:
The Tahoma Audubon Society’s mission is to conserve and restore ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and earth’s biological diversity.
We strive to involve youth, families, and seniors in the discovery and protection of native habitat throughout Pierce County. We develop and offer year-round, family-based, nature education programming at the Tacoma Nature Center (Tacoma, WA), the Adriana Hess Audubon Center (University Place, WA), and at the Morse Wildlife Preserve (Graham, WA).
We organize and lead field trips throughout Puget Sound and the State. We also work to affect public policy at the city, county and state level to achieve our conservation goals.

History:
Tahoma Audubon Society (TAS) has been active in Pierce County since 1969. Our mission is to conserve and restore ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and earth’s biological diversity. TAS’s purpose is to increase county residents’ knowledge of, appreciation for and protection of wildlife, wilderness, natural and agricultural resources, and natural landscape.
From the original 150 members in 1969, TAS has grown to a total of 1,900 in Pierce County. In 1999, upon receiving the 2.5-acre Adriana Hess Wetland Park and building in University Place as a bequest, TAS relocated there and soon hired two staff persons. Volunteers run the office 6 days a week from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The organization’s nine committees accomplish the work of the organization: publish a monthly newsletter; run education programs, field trips and monthly membership forums; organize volunteers and keep the board and finances running smoothly.
Tahoma Audubon has been instrumental in protecting over 5,500 acres of open space and habitat and helped secure over $17 million for funding for parks and open space acquisition. By working collaboratively with other organization we have lead the way or played a supporting role in many successful efforts to save threatened habitat in Pierce County.
