Our mission statement says simply that, "In an atmosphere of dignity and respect, the Food Connection partners the diverse skills of our community to provide food and resources for the hungry people of Pierce County." We provide emergency food assistance, an opportunity for clients and members of the larger community to volunteer and work together, and a connection to advocacy efforts on behalf of low-income families.
Description:
We are the largest food bank in Pierce County, serving over 115,000 people (duplicated count) each year. We collect, process and distribute more than 1.9 million pounds of food each year. We are open to collect and process food Monday - Saturday. Our food line is open Wednesday/Friday (9:30 - 11:00 and 12:00 - 3:30), Tuesday/Thursday (12:00 - 3:30 and 4:30 - 6:00)and on Saturdays (9:30 - 11:00 and 12:00 - 1:30). We serve between 150 -250 households five days per week. In addition, we operate a weekly mobile food bank on Saturdays to Lakewood's Springbrook neighborhood. 43% of our clients have at least one working adult in their household, and 52% are children or seniors.
History:
We have been providing emergency food assistance since 1982. Having started in a garage in response to the needs of the Hilltop neighborhood we now serve all Pierce County residents. With a staff of 7 (3 full-time, four part-time) and hundreds of volunteers from the community of need and the larger community, we are able to provide more than $10 of food for every dollar we raise.
