We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. We believe that every child's heart carries a cherished wish, and that somewhere there’s another heart that can make the wish come true. Our goal is to do everything we can to connect the two.
Description:
We become aware of eligible children through wish referrals, which are accepted from the child’s parents or legal guardians, and from medical professionals such as physicians, nurses and social workers. We have three requirements before a wish can be granted: • The child must be referred to the Foundation between 2 ½ years old and prior to his/her 18th birthday. • The child's physician determines that his/her medical condition is life-threatening. • The child has not received a wish from the Make-A-Wish Foundation or any other recognized wish-granting organization. While the variety of wishes we receive are as varied as children’s imaginations, most wishes fall into one of four categories: “I wish to go…”, “I wish to have…”, “I wish to meet…”, or I wish to be…”.
History:
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Washington State was founded in 1986. In its first year, this chapter granted a total of eight wishes. The organization grew rapidly as more children throughout Washington were granted their wishes each year. In September 1999, we increased our service area by adding Alaska, Northern Idaho and Montana. Now one of the largest chapters in the United States, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Alaska, Montana, Northern Idaho & Washington has granted more than 3,000 wishes.
