Since Federal Way's incorporation in 1990, we have focused on important community projects such as new parks, new community facilities for the performing arts, transportation system improvements and downtown revitalization. We strive to use contracted and public-private partnerships to deliver services and products to the community at the lowest possible cost.

Description:
Federal Way operates under the Council/Manager form of government. The City Council consists of seven members who are directly elected by the citizens for four-year terms. The City Council established law and policy by adopting ordinances and resolutions and appoints the City Manager. The Mayor is elected by the Council from among its members for a two-year term. Several commissions, made up of citizen volunteers, advise the Council. The City Manager is the Chief Executive and manages the day-to-day operations.

History:
The name Federal Way was first used in 1929 to identify a school district and was officially adopted in the early 1950's by the Chamber of Commerce. Changing growth patterns in the community and increasing traffic congestion led to the incorporation of the City of Federal Way on February 28th, 1990. Currently, the city has a service area population of 105,000 making it the third largest city in King County and the seventh largest in the state. The average resident is 33 years old and 54% of the population is between 5 and 44 years old. The median income for a resident is $51,031.
