Northwest Trek Wildlife Park RSVP Site
Last updated on May 28, 2008

"Northwest Trek Wildlife Park is dedicated to conservation, education and recreation by displaying, interpreting and researching native northwest wildlife and their natural habitats."

Description:
Northwest Trek Wildlife Park, a division of Metro Parks Tacoma,is located in the foothills of Mt. Rainier 6 miles north of the town of Eatonville. Covering nearly a square mile, Trek displays all of the major North American native animals in very natural exhibits. The park is accredited by the AZA (American Zoo and Aquarium Association, a professional organization which recognizes the top 10% of wildlife facilities in the country.) Premier animal viewing, park maintenance, visitor experience, strong fiscal responsibility, educational opportunities and the provision of wholesome family recreation are top priorities of NW Trek. The park's education department generates exciting and interesting learning opportunities for visitors of all ages. Most of the park's volunteers assist with this endeavor.

History:
Northwest Trek was donated to Metro Parks Tacoma in 1971 by renowned Tacoma pediatrician, Dr. David Hellyer and his civic-minded wife, Connie Hellyer. After great community support demonstrated by a successful bond issue campaign, Trek was dedicated on July 17, 1975. The park holds the distinction of being the third most visited county attraction behind Mt. Rainier National Park, and Trek's sister facility, Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. County voters recognized the importance of the park and showed their support by passing a tax initiative supporting the NW Trek operation.
