The YWCA is a women's membership movement nourished by roots in the Christian faith and sustained by the richness of many beliefs and values. Strengthened by diversity, the YWCA draws together members who strive to create opportunities for women's growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision: Peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people. The YWCA will thrust its collective power toward the elimination of racism wherever it exists and by any means necessary.

Description:
Programs offered at the YWCA Pierce County include racial justice trainings and advisory councils; shelter, advocacy, case management, education, support groups and legal services for domestic violence survivors; domestic violence education for the community; and programming for teenage girls living in juvenile detention.

History:
The YWCA Pierce County was established in 1906. Some historical highlights include the start of the Campfire Movement in the northwest (1912), forming of the Sexual Assault Center (1970s), the founding of Washington state's first shelter for domestic violence survivors (1976) and establishing the Eugene P.Tone School for the Homeless (1984). While we're highly regarded for our work with survivors of domestic violence, we have never hesitated to pioneer new services to further the best interests of women and girls.
