Puget Creek Restoration Society is dedicated to protecting, enhancing and restoring the Puget Creek Watershed and similar streams, wetlands and green spaces on Commencement Bay and Puget Sound. Through hands-on restoration and research, educational outreach, advocacy-and by increasing environmental awareness-we seek to preserve this important habitat so it will continue to be an example of what people can do to protect and restore the environment in an urban setting.
Description:
We are a 501 c 3 non-profit organization with an office in downtown Tacoma. We are an all-volunteer run organization working with over 800 volunteers last year. We are involved in a variety of hands-on stream restoration projects ranging from monitoring for salmon, water quality to planting native vegetation and eradication of blackberries etc. We provide services and opportunities for students to do projects with us, internships with us and other student oriented activities. Our hands-on activities also include trail maintenance such as gravel placement, Coho rearing pond development, eelgrass monitoring with divers, beach studies. At the same time we provide opportunities in the office for volunteers to enter data, file and develop brochures. Volunteers also attend meetings representing the organization.
History:
Our organization was started in September 2000 by Scott M. Hansen through his work from the preceding 4 years. We now have 250 members, a very active board and an office with a resource library for the Puget Creek Watershed.
