If you are warm-hearted, a good listener, interested in hearing life stories, and comfortable with the dying process, then volunteering with Palliative Care is for you. Your encouraging monthly telephone calls will assist patients and/or families as they manage the transition toward a quality end-of-life experience. All calls are placed in the comfort of your own home. A maximum of 4 patients may be assigned at one time. The patient/family needs to be called once a month. Anticipate spending one hour per phone call. All Partners in Palliative Care volunteers must complete our application process, which consists of reference checks, Washington State Patrol background check, and disclosure statement. After the application process has been finished, a four hour palliative care training must be completed. In addition, volunteers:
- Must be 18 years of age of older
- Demonstrate interpersonal communication skills
- Demonstrate active listening skills
- Must be dependable
- Verbalize and demonstrate acceptance of others' beliefs and values
- Able to support in the death and dying process
- Must agree to a one-year commitment to the program
