The Uncas School-Age Program, Kids' Junction at Uncas Elementary School provides quality child care for the children of the school and local community.

Description:
The Center offers childcare services to school age children before and after school during the academic year and during the Summer Vacation period. Nutritious snacks, homework support, art exploration, structured art projects, fine and gross motor experiences make up the program. Children are exposed to opportunities through all activities to develop and enhance social skills such as leadership, cooperative play, respect for others, and development of a positive self esteem. 80% of the enrolled participants receive financial aid. Between 60-75% of enrolled participants are eligible for free/reduced hot lunch as determined by the National School Lunch Program.

History:
*1995 Grant from the Department of Social Services in collaboration with the University of Connecticut Cooperative Extension Program. Purpose of grant: To establish school based childcare programs in selected Norwich Public Schools.Parent Board of Directors established. Staff hired, Program materials purchased, and licensing process began.

  • Spring 1996, Program opens with 8 children enrolled.
*1998 Board selects LEARN as Fiscal Agent. LEARN assumes responsibility for managing payroll, tax preparation, and management of all Center financial matters.
*November 2001: the Center prepares to assume complete responsibility for all aspects of management.
*December 2001 the Center is accepted as a United Way member agency.
