Covenant Shelter provides temporary shelter, meals, case management and other support services to homeless individuals and single-parent families.
History:
Covenant Shelter was established in 1983 by St. James Episcopal Church and St. Mary Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church to meet the needs of the area's homeless. With funds from the City of New London and local foundations, a building belonging to St. Mary Star of the Sea Church was converted into a facility to temporarily house single individuals and single-parent families. Originally established with only 17 beds Covenant Shelter has gradually expanded to its present capacity of 35 beds. Additionally, Covenant Shelter has increased the number and level of support services provided to clients. Covenant Shelter offers three meals daily, case management. educational workshops/classes for the adults and recreational/educational programs for the children. With the goal of assisting homeless individuals to reestablish themselves in the community, Covenant Shelter networks with area housing projects, landlords, agencies and businesses to help clients secure housing, education, treatment (medical, psychological/substance abuse ) and employment.
