Alternatives For Girls helps homeless and high risk girls and young women avoid violence, teen pregnancy, and exploitation; and helps them to explore and acccess the support, resources, and opportunities necessary to be safe, to grow strong, and to make positive choices for their lives. In order to accomplish this mission we provide: 1) transition to independent living services to homeless young women ages 17 - 20; prevention services to girls living in our neighborhoods ages 5 - 17; and street outreach to women on the streets of southwest Detroit involved in sex work and substance abuse and young women involved in risky behaviors throughout the metro area.
History:
Alternatives For Girls was incorporated in 1987 as a result of commuity concern for the girls and young women in the area surrounding Tiger Stadium. Residents, business owners and the religious community were witnessing young girls involved in prostitution and out on the street during the school hours, etc. Therefore, they formed a coalition of people that met on a regular basis to discuss the issues at hand and potentional solutions in terms of services needed in the area. Out of those discussions and national research Alternatives For Girls was formed and implemented originally as a mostly volunteer run agency on a shoestring budget thanks to the generosity of St. Peter's Episcopal Church on the coner of Michigan & Trumbull. Today we are a national known agency with 40 full time paid staff and over 120 volunteers and a budget of $1.7 million.
