The Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan is the only furniture bank in the metropolitan area. Our mission is to improve the living conditions of Oakland and Macomb County residents in need by collecting gently used furniture, beds and appliances and distributing these to families that have been referred to us by other agencies.
Description:
The Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan partners with over 200 human service agencies, churches and schools and services over 3,000 families annually. 25% of these families have been homeless, victims of domestic violence or fire or have other emergency situations. The remainder are the working poor who cannot afford basic furniture items or appliances. These families come to our warehouse in Pontiac and Warren and choose the items they need. Each month, we receive over 500 new requests for furniture assistance and have a waiting list of over 700 families.
History:
The Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan was established in 1968 to provide furniture assistance to need families in need. Since then, the organization has grown in scope and in the number of families helped. We continue to operate with a small staff, preferring to use volunteers to make this program available to as many families as possible. The Furniture Bank underwent a capital campaign and moved into our own office/warehouse in Pontiac, in February of 2000. The Macomb facility opened in Warren in July of 2007.
