History:
Adult Well-Being Services began in 1953 as a volunteer project of the Junior League of Detroit when they opened one of the country's first senior citizen centers on Detroit's east side. The Senior Center was established to meet the needs of low-income senior adults living in the community and was incorporated as an agency in 1955.

The Senior Center grew and changed in response to changing community needs. In the 70's there was a new trend in the mental health arena. Persons with mental illness began to be served in the community rather that in hospitals. Former recipients of mental health hospitals were welcomed into the Senior Center. Soon we started a "senior center-like" program for those persons who were not old enough to participate in the senior center. The agency's name was changed to Adult Service Centers, Inc. to reflect this broadened services.

In 1986 the organization merged with Well-Being Services for Aging to become Adult Well-Being Services(AWBS), adding in-home services to the agency's services. Social workers visited older adults in their homes to do assessments and help them remain in their homes.

Today the agency continues to provide an array of essential services to seniors and adults with mental and/or physical disabilities. We now have 55 years experience serving older adults in a variety of community-based programs. Nearly 5,000 people were served last year through our comprehensive service units:
*Healthy Aging
*Mental Health & Substance Abuse Treatment
*Developmental Disability Services
*Guardianship Services
*Assertive Community Treatment
