Description:
The Washtenaw County Chapter of the American Red Cross uses volunteers in every area of work. Health and Safety classes are lead by volunteers, Disaster relief and education is provided by volunteers, and all aspects of the chapter as a business uses volunteer skills.
History:
In 1917, the Washtenaw County Red Cross received its official charter when Dr. Henry Douglas became the first chairman. Membership in the local chapter increased almost tenfold in the first few years of its existence. Our history in service began during World War I and World War II when Red Cross volunteers produced surgical dressings for soldiers. Throughout the Great Depression, they aided the needy by distributing clothing, government grain, and other relief supplies. It was at the time of World War II that official service groups began to form, and the Chapter began to collect blood for the armed forces. The Chapter also began developing training programs such as: First Aid, Nurse's Aid, and Home Nursing.
