Looking for individuals interested in volunteering once a month for stewardship activities at Island Lake Recreation Area.

You will be working with State Park Stewardship Steward Laurel Malvitz in helping to restore native fens, tallgrass prairies, lakeplain prairies, and oak savannas on state park lands and recreation areas.

For more information you can contact Laurel Malvitz by e-mail at MalvitzL@michigan.gov.

Calendar of Volunteer Workdays:

Wednesday, October 15, 2008 ,
Island Lake Recreation Area , 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Meet in the parking lot by the JC Penney store at Green Oak Village Place mall. Go to http://www.shopsatgreenoak.com/directions.html to get directions to the mall from your starting location and to learn about the "roundabouts" you will drive through. There is easy access to the prairie where we will collect seed from this parking lot and meeting here will maximize our seed collection time. We will hike less than a half mile to the wildflower and grass seed collection site.

Saturday, November 1, 2008 ,
Island Lake Recreation Area , 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Take the only park road until you see signs (approx. 15 minutes from the entrance). We will likely meet at Dodge picnic area and hike about a half mile to get to the wildflower seed collection site.

Saturday, December 6, 2008 ,
Island Lake Recreation Area , 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Assist in clearing out invasive shrubs that will otherwise take over this savanna and crowd out native grasses and wildflowers. Meet at the Riverbend Picnic Area park lot.

These workday activities not suitable for children 12 or under. An adult must accompany children between the ages of 13 to 16 for these volunteer activities.
