Hospice Volunteers for Friendly Visiting

| Last updated on May 8, 2008 |
Volunteers are the heart and soul of Beaumont Hospice. They are essential in helping patients and families cope with emotional, social, and spiritual challenges during the late stages of life. Volunteers provide friendly visiting, companionship, and respite sitting. Our volunteers DO NOT provide any 'hands on' care. Our program asks for at least two hours of volunteer time per week. Please note that we ask our volunteers for daytime availability. Volunteers decide which settings they would prefer to see patients in such as Nursing Homes or a Home setting. Also, volunteers decide where geographically they would like to stay within as we service the entire tri-county area. For example, a 15-mile radius from home is very common. Our program has volunteers that are students, full-time employees, retirees, etc. Your volunteering can bring such compassion & TLC to those who need it most. Volunteer activities include but are not limited to:
- Companionship
- Respite sitting
- Friendly Visiting
- Playing cards with a patient
Volunteers DO NOT provide ANY personal hands-on type care such as bathing, feeding, assisting with walking, etc. Volunteering in hospice is a really rewarding experience as you will have the opportunity and privilege to meet many great souls. Volunteers are required to attend a basic hospice orientation that includes the mission, philosophy, and goals of Beaumont Hospice. We are seeking compassionate people that have a positive outlook on life. Over 90% of our volunteers do not have a medical background. I bring this up because all you will need to know to become a great hospice volunteer is provided in our training sessions. If you have a BIG heart, you will be a great volunteer.
