General Information
Agency: Spay & Neuter Action Program (SNAP)
Program name: Spay and Neuter Action Program (SNAP)
Description : SNAP subsidizes spay and neuter surgeries for the pets of low-income residents of southern New Mexico. Anyone receiving government assistance, full-time college or university students, people whose income meets government standards for low-income, and any homeless individual or family qualifies for our services. There is a limit of five subsidies per year for any individual or family.
Hours of Operation: Mon. through Sat. - 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Eligibility Requirements: Anyone receiving public assistance, or whose income meets WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) eligibility standards, is eligible for our services. Full-time college and university students are also eligible. Clients make a small co-pay ($15 for cats and $25 for dogs) toward the cost of the surgery and SNAP pays the remaining cost directly to the veterinary clinic that performs the surgery.
Intake Procedure: For clients in the Las Cruces area, they must come in to our office during the listed office hours to qualify for services, pay the co-pay amount, and receive a voucher and surgery intake form to present to the veterinarian. Clients make their own veterinary appointments at the clinic listed on the voucher. Clients must present the SNAP forms to the veterinary clinic for SNAP to pay the surgery costs. For clients in the outlying areas, they can call the office and either speak to someone during office hours, or leave a message and someone will call them back. They then can either mail a money order for the co-pay amount and we will mail the vouchers back, or come into the office to pay if it is convenient. We have translation services available for anyone who leaves a message in Spanish, and this is stated on our greeting. Beginning in November, we also will visit community centers throughout Dona Ana County to explain our services, distribute literature, and distribute vouchers.
