This organization works to improve opportunities for the blind and visually impaired of all ages, including education of blind children, better legislation affecting the blind, better public transit, and better employment. We depend on the public for assistance. The adjustment to new blindness can be a very difficult one. We provide support and guidance to blind people in many different situations.

Description:
We are a membership organization. Activities include social events, educational events for both the blind and sighted, and fund raising events. For example, our annual Cycle for Independence encourages blind and sighted people to participate together planning, riding tandem bikes, and organizing a large bike-a-thon to raise funds. Our summer picnic for blind youth allows blind teen-agers to meet blind role models and learn about careers.

History:
The National Federation of the Blind of Idaho was founded in 1935. It was first organized jointly with Utah. The two states broke apart some time in the 1940's. The name of the organization has changed several times through the decades, but it has been known as the National Federation of the Blind of Idaho for about 35 years.
In 1967 the NFBI took the leading role in persuading the Idaho Legislature to create the Idaho Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired. The NFBI works cooperatively with government and private agencies and schools that serve the blind whenever possible.
