We are a local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Our mission is to improve the lives of people with mental illness, as well as the lives of their families and friends. We seek to achieve that goal through providing education, support and advocacy.
Description:
Our programs of support and education are the foundation of NAMI-Boise's mission. We provide free support groups for consumers, family members and friends. The 12-week Family-to-Family Education program is offered twice a year in the Spring and Fall. The Peer-to-Peer Education course is a 9-week program encouraging those with mental illness to recover and live well with their illness. Volunteers staff the office and assist callers to locate appropriate services and negotiate their way through the public mental health system. We also maintain a small lending library of books and videos on mental health/illness.
History:
NAMI-Boise was incorporated in 1985 as the Alliance for the Mentally Ill. The organization evolved from and replaced the Boise Mental Health Association, which was established in the mid-1950s. More recently, under national guidelines, AMI became NAMI-Boise. We strive to educate to reduce stigma, provide support through quality support groups, and to advocate on behalf of the mentally ill both at the local and national level.
