The mission of the Northwest Children's Home is to provide rehabilitative, therapeutic and educational services for children and families.
Description:
Residential Services: The Northwest Children’s Home is the oldest continuously operated children’s residential program in Idaho. We are licensed by the State Department of Health and Welfare. Our philosophy is to integrate every child in a way best suited for their individual needs. This provides the child the greatest opportunity to successfully transition back into the community. By coaching and counseling, we give every child an ability to face past issues, gain new insights, learn self responsibility, and manage their own behaviors. Education Centers: Through the development of an individual education plan, each child’s behavioral, social, and emotional problems are addressed using a variety of group and individual interventions. Our Education Centers provide a full range of reading, language arts, math, social sciences, physical education and visual arts. Accreditation by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges and the Idaho State Department of Education allows students to earn academic credit, which transfers to all public schools. A 1:4 staff-to-student ratio creates a more intimate and enhanced learning environment. The ultimate goal is to return the students to a regular classroom. Advocacy Programs: We recognize that many children can benefit from an independent and transitional living, vocational, and educational advocacy program. While they are in our care, we assist them with career-interest assessment, self and job exploration, job search and preparation classes, education exploration beyond high school, and at times provide job training. We also provide programs that focus on the real-life skills needed for successful transition to independent living for those who do not have traditional guidance and support from their families. The young people who have been in our care also are eligible to apply for scholarships to further their education, help with independent living, or vocational training. Finally, we develop goals and steps to help our residents obtain health and wellness, educational, and work empowerment.
History:
Founded in 1908, the Northwest Children’s Home, Inc., is a non-profit corporation providing a variety of therapeutic, educational, and counseling programs. These programs are designed to meet the individual needs of our behaviorally and emotionally disturbed children by providing a safe and supportive living and learning environment. Our children, who have experienced abuse, neglect, or abandonment, are referred to us by state-run agencies, the judicial system, social services, and our communities.
