GAP is a support group for grandparents or other relatives raising children. Our mission is to provide education, information and the social supports needed by grandparents and other relatives raising children in their care. To advocate for legislative changes that protect the rights of all Idaho children.

Description:
GAP is a support group for grandparents or other kin-caregivers raising children whose parents are unable to assume the responsibilities of parenthood do to: substance abuse, death, child abuse and neglect, teen pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, incarceration, mental illness, family violence or poverty.

According to the U.S. Census, Idaho's population of grandparents raising grandchildren increased by 78.9% from 1990 to 2000. Idaho had the third largest increase in the nation during that period. Currently, in Idaho there are more than 18,000 children being raised by grandparents.

We create a safe and supportive environment to discuss concerns and an opportunity to share knowledge and strengths.
We meet the first Monday of every month at Cherry Lane Christian Church in Meridian.

History:
The Treasure Valley GAP group has been providing a support group for grandparents and other relatives raising children for over 13 years. Ours was the first support group started in Idaho and currently there are now 19 other support groups throughout Idaho. GAP enables individuals and or grandparent/kin support groups to work with one another to ensure that our grandchildren have the opportunity to have a safe and stable childhood.
