The Adult Success Center's Adult Basic Education (ABE) program serves adults over the age of 16 who are not currently enrolled in school and who are functioning at or below the 12th grade level. Our program helps adults obtain the basic literacy skills necessary to function well in family and society; continue their education to at least the level of a high school diploma; secure needed training and education to become more employable, productive, and responsible citizens; and learn to speak, understand, read, and write English as a non-native language.
Description:
The Adult Success Center's Adult Basic Education (ABE) program at Idaho State University offers free education to adults who are 16 years of age or older and not enrolled in any other school. Our main site is located in the College of Technology's General Education Department, and we operate several outreach sites, including McCammon, Montpelier, Soda Springs, Preston, Blackfoot, and the Bannock County Jail, among others. We also partner with community organizations who operate their own literacy programs. At the main site, we offer classes Monday through Thursday in basic literacy skills, including reading, writing, and math at all levels. Many of our ABE students are pursuing a GED; others are acquiring necessary job skills. Our Job Education Training (JET) program designs and facilitates classes specifically geared toward marketable job skills, such as customer service, writing skills, and computer literacy. We also offer English classes for speakers of other languages, incorporating civics-based instruction for immigrants to learn more about the history, culture, and residence / citizenship responsibilities of the United States. We are funded through the Idaho State Department of Education.
History:
The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program has been in operation at Idaho State University since at least the early 1970s. Over the decades we have grown exponentially, and now are able to offer services throughout the seven counties of southeastern Idaho under our jurisdiction. Several hundred students access our services each year.
