History:
The Idaho Botanical Garden is a non-profit organization begun in 1984 on a portion of the grounds of the former Idaho State Penitentiary. Over the years, many specialty gardens have been designed including the Herb Garden, Jane Falk Oppenheimer Heirloom Rose Garden, Alpine Garden, Muriel and Diana Kirk English Garden, Historical Iris Garden, Meditation Garden, Water Garden, Cactus Garden, Peony Garden, and the Children's Garden. In 2004 the Lewis & Clark Native Plant Garden, filled with plants listed in the Lewis & Clark journals as found in the Intermountain West was added. The Idaho Botanical Garden is entirely self-supporting. Funds come only from memberships, donations, events, programs, and site leasing.
