The Idaho State Historical Society preserves and promotes Idaho's cultural heritage. Our vision is to inspire, enrich and engage all Idahoans by leading the state in preserving and sharing our dynamic cultural heritage.
Description:
Over 13,000 prisoners did time at the Old Idaho Penitentiary between 1870 and 1973. After the prison closed in 1973, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the Idaho State Historical Society offers a video presentation and self-guided tour of this unique historic site. During the summer months, guided interpretive walks are also offered. Exhibits: include a tattoo exhibit, an electrical exhibit, a transportation exhibit, and a historic weapons exhibit; all are located throughout the site.
History:
After the prison closed in 1973, the Idaho State Historical Society took over administration of the site. The Old Penitentiary was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and opened to visitors. Each year thousands of visitors, ranging from school children to seniors, come and experience what life was like for Idaho's historic convicts.
