Volunteer Wayne is the volunteer clearinghouse for Wayne County. Its mission is to increase community agencies' capacity to serve Wayne County citizens by matching volunteer skills and interests with identified agency needs.  Volunteer Wayne places volunteers in meaningful positions, providing non-profits with the support they need. Volunteer Wayne also provides technical assistance to community agencies in volunteer management, and is a resource in many ways to build their capacity.  Technical assistance is also available to guide corporations on how to energize their corporate volunteer programs. Funds to support Volunteer Wayne are primarily from United Way of Wayne County.

RSVP (the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) is the heart of Volunteer Wayne. Its mission is to provide service opportunities to individuals over 55 by matching their life experiences, skills and interests to address priority needs in Wayne County. RSVP is part of Senior Corps, a division of the USA Freedom Corps, that is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that also oversees AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America. Together these programs engage more than 2 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year. Funds to support RSVP are primarily from the Corporation for National and Community Service.

The key to Volunteer Wayne's appeal is flexibility. Volunteers decide how much time they have to give and build a plan of service around their interests and experience. Volunteers can use skills they have learned in their careers or choose to learn something new. A retired tax accountant, for example, can volunteer in his or her field of expertise or decide to help build houses for the underprivileged.

In addition to matching volunteers to volunteer stations (agencies) in Wayne County, Volunteer Wayne will also maintain a database of volunteers to contact as specific needs arise, such as a food drive or in the event of a disaster.

Volunteer Job Description

• Volunteer opportunities vary with each agency served and can be long term or short term in nature. For example: weekly clerical assistance at the hospital could be considered long term whereas participating in a special fundraiser for the Community Arts Council could be considered short term. Other volunteer opportunities include: mentoring, tutoring children or adults, clerical, telephone reassurance for homebound, working with seniors or the handicapped, crisis hotline, rebuilding homes, the arts, historic preservation and the medical field.
• Necessary skills vary from simply making a caring phone call once a week to as technical as building a home
• Time commitment starts as low as one hour a month to full time
• Individuals or groups can be matched to meaningful service

Volunteer Wayne/RSVP:

• Determines the resources you need to run a successful volunteer program. Provides technical support to develop corporate volunteer programs.
• Develops "signature projects" that celebrate company anniversaries or special occasions.
• Gives your company an opportunity to get involved in specific projects at local agencies during Make a Difference Day and other community projects.
• Introduces leadership opportunities to employees.

Volunteer Wayne/RSVP:

• Helps you recruit volunteers. We promote your opportunities through "Volunteer Wayne;" our weekly column in The Goldsboro News Argus; quarterly mailings of our newsletter "The Volunteer" to our volunteers; our website on the Internet; public relations events like volunteer fairs; and the media.
• Provides technical assistance. We provide effective, volunteer management training, plus on-site, individualized consultations for nonprofit managers.
• Helps you recognize your volunteers through Wayne County's annual volunteer recognition event during National Volunteer Week.
