Mission: To inspire and enable all young people in Wayne County, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

Description:
We serve 2,100 youth ages 6 - 18 Monday through Friday throughout the year. Program hours of operation are 2 p.m. - 7/8pm during the school year, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. during teacher workdays and holidays, 12 - 6 p.m. on early release days and have extended hours during the summer. We provide our members a safe place to learn and grow, ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals, life-enhancing programs and character development experiences, hope and opportunity. Our core program areas are: Education and Career Development, Health and Life Skills, Character and Leadership Development, the Arts, Sports, Fitness and Recreation and program special events. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, a sense of usefulness, a sense of belonging and a sense of power or influence.

History:
Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County is a United Way agency. It was founded in 1946 by Albert D. Paley. In 1947 a Board of Directors was established, the first members were inducted and programs were conducted in the Wayne County Community Building. In 1954 the "Boys Club" became one of the original participating agencies when the Goldsboro United Fund was established. In 1957 a building campaign, led by George Dewey raised over $31,000 to purchase the Lionel Weil Home where the Club moved. Membership outgrew facilities at the Weil home so the Board of Directors donated monies to purchase 9.5 acres on Royall Avenue. In 1966 a building campaign drive, under the leadership of Munroe Best was a success and completed in 1967. The Club (known as the Main Unit at 1401 Royall Avenue) was opened and dedicated in 1968. In 1984, the Board of Directors approved girl memberships and in 1990 changed its name to Boys & Girls Club of Wayne County. The Northern Wayne Unit opened in Fremont in 1993 and in 2000 the Mount Olive Boys & Girls Club merged their operation and charter with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County. We currently serve over 1,800 youth throughout Wayne County. The Boys & Girls Clubs' sports program has been second to none throughout its existence, due to volunteers who commit their time and talent to see kids develop skills and leadership. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County is successful within its mission and programs due largely to volunteers and community support.
