The mission of the Southern Wayne Family Center is to reduce the incidence of child abuse and neglect in Southern Wayne County (South of the Neuse River).
Description:
The Southern Wayne Family Center is Wayne County's Families for Kids 2 Initiative project. This inititaive focuses on child abuse prevention. The center, located on the campus of Southern Academy in Mount Olive, serves families south of the Neuse River by providing programs and services that focus on building strong, healthy families and by increasing awareness of available resources. Programs include Wise Guys and Gals youth development program, Parents Anonymous, parenting classes, ESL and GED classes, public access to computers and computer classes, Outreach activities, and information and referral. Transportation and childcare are provided for most programs. Southern Wayne Family Center is a part of the Wayne Uplift Resource Association (WURA)family. WURA has another family center in Goldsboro.
History:
Wayne County was involved in the first Families for Kids Initiative through the NC Department of Health and Human Services in 1995 - 2000. Duke Endowement aproached the state DHHS regarding their willingness to fund the second FFK Initiative to counties who were interested in prevention of child abuse and neglect. In the sping of 2000 a community collaborative was formed in Wayne County to look at the statistics and needs of the county. Wayne Uplift Resource Associaiton, a family resource center in Goldsboro, was voted by the collaborative to be the fiscal agent. A proposal was written, and was funded to support a family resource center, the Southern Wayne Family Center. The center opened October 23, 2000.
