The Mental Health Association in Wayne County will promote and advocate for mental health wellness and recovery. Our association will develop and implement prevention and detection programs that promote mental health wellness. We will reduce stigma and decrease discrimination through education and public policy. Finally, we will advocate for the development of comprehensive quality services to persons with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse and their families.

Description:
The Mental Health Association in Wayne County is an affiliate of The National Mental Health Association and The Mental Health Association in North Carolina. We are educators and advocates for persons with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse and their families. Through our programs, we will strive to reduce the stigma associated with mental health. Our office is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. We have information booklets on mental health topics.
We also provide free and confidential Depression, Anxiety and Substance Screenings. We also have a list of referrals for Wayne County.

History:
The Mental Health Association in Wayne County began over forty years ago. In 1962 Dr. A. Hazel Zealy, Jr., a general practitioner in Wayne County, spearheaded the Mental Health Association. An another instrumental partner in forming the organization was Dr. S.B. McPheeters. Together they saw a need to provide services to the citizens of Wayne County.
