Cherry Hospital's mission is to provide quality in-patient psychiatric services to the citizens of eastern North Carolina.
Description:
Cherry Hospital operates under the Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Mental Health/Developmental Disabilities/and Substance Abuse Services. The facility serves teens, adults and seniors and averages approximately 250 patients per day. The SPECIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT at Cherry Hospital was created to provide a comprehensive and varied program of religious services and volunteer support to enhance the lives of mentally ill patients receiving treatment.
History:
Cherry Hospital was established in 1880 when the NC General Assembly appropriated $20,000 to establish an African American "mental" institution for all 100 counties. Integration occured in 1964 when the Civil Rights Act was passed. Today, the hospital serves the 33 eastern counties.
