Our mission is to champion the connection of needed community resources with schools to help young people learn, stay in school, and prepare for life.

Description:
Communities In Schools serves as a broker for resources for at-risk children in public schools. We work collaboratively with multiple agencies and individuals in Wayne County. We provide the Great Leaps supplemental reading program in several schools.
We manage the Teen Court program for first-time juvenile offenders. We coordinate the Teen Health Corps at Goldsboro High School. We recruit tutors and mentors to assist children in Wayne County. We operate school supply drives.

Our goal is to surround young people with caring adults who can help them prepare for life. These may be individuals who spend time tutoring a child. Or, it may be someone who just wants to be a friend to a
child. Through this friendship, the volunteer may be instrumental in improving self-esteem and motivating a child to achieve on a higher level.

Adult volunteers in Teen Court may monitor the teen jury while they deliberate. They may be trained to conduct exit interviews with defendants. If they have knowledge of the justice system, they can serve as mentors to the teen defense or prosecuting attorneys.

We sometimes host events that we need help planning. These projects require time and organizational skills.
Volunteers often are much better at this than staff, because our time is limited.

We believe every child needs and deserves a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult, a safe place to learn and grow, a marketable skill to use upon graduation, a healthy start and a healthy future, and a chance to give back to peers and community. WE WOULD WELCOME YOU AS PART OF OUR TEAM TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

History:
Communities In Schools will soon be celebrating ten years of operation. We opened our office in April, 1994, in the Chamber of Commerce building on North William Street. We went from serving 84 students in 1996-1997 to serving 2,056 in 2001-2002. Volunteers are the backbone of our business. In 2001-2002, we had 414 volunteers involved in our programming. Our history includes smiles on children's faces, hugs, improved behavior, improved grades, and improved self-
esteem. It doesn't get any better than that!
