The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

Description:
The Charter Oak Chapter of CT of the American Red Cross serves 83 towns across northern and eastern Connecticut. Headquarters for the Charter Oak Chapter are in Farmington with a Service Center in Waterford. We provide emergency disaster relief; disaster education; health and safety programs such as First Aid, CPR, and Water Safety; youth leadership development; international social services and tracing; emergency communications for military families; and volunteer opportunities for adults and youth. The Chapter also supports the Connecticut Region Blood Services Program, emergency communications between members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families, and international social services and tracing. Volunteer opportunities include internships for college students.

History:
The American Red Cross has been providing relief to victims of wars and disasters since it was founded by Clara Barton in 1881. The organization received its
Congressional Charter to be the primary agency for disaster relief in the U.S.A. in 1905. The Greater Hartford Chapter (now the Charter Oak Chapter) was founded in the same year.
