To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in the the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community.

Special Olympics Connecticut Northwest Region serves over 1,2000 athletes in fifty towns located in Litchfield County and parts of New Haven, Fairfield, and Hartford Counties. Our Regional Office is located in Southbury on Southbury Training School grounds. There are 21 Local Programs that train athletes in such sports as basketball, softball, aquatics, alpine skiing, and more. The Local Programs are headed by volunteer Local Coordinators and assisted by other volunteers in such roles as coaches, assitant coaches and charperones. Volunteering for Special Olympics directly affects the lives of these wonderful athletes.
History:
This organization is known as Special Olympics Inc. with headquarters located in Washington, D.C., USA. Special Olympics, Inc. (SOI) is the official world governing body for Special Olympics. Since 1969 Special Olympics Connecticut (SOCT) has provided year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Over 7,300 athletes are involved with SOCT through Local, Regional and State Programs. SOCT is a non-profit, charitable organization, which contributes to the lifelong physical, social and personal development of people with intellectual disabilities in the state of Connecticut. More than 10,000 volunteers, 1,200 certified coaches, numerous corporate and civic organizations, and our athletes and their families make up Special Olympics Connecticut's winning team.
