United Way of West Central Connecticut

The Bristol Board of Education mentoring program is a school based program. Our mentors come from all walks of lives and go through a training program and background check before they are placed in the school. The mentor volunteers for 1 hour per week to act as a friend, role model, confidant and supporter for a child in one of the Bristol Schools. The mentor can choose the gender and age of the child they would like to work with and what school is most convenient for them. The mentor meets with the child to play games, do crafts, talk, share lunch, or do extra school work. Whatever works best for the mentor/mentee relationship. The mentor program offers a support system for all mentors at the building and district level. Many of our mentors describe this time as the best hour of their week. It is a great program because the time commitment is doable and the rewards are great. It offers our children on the brink of success the little extra encouragement they need to succeed.

The mentor candidate has to fill out an application, go through a training session, and have a background check.
