homeWORD develops affordable housing using sustainable and replicable methods and creates asset building strategies for those most in need. homeWORD seeks to educate the community about important housing policy issues and to help create changes in policies that will increase access to affordable housing for low and moderate income families.
Description:
homeWORD has recently completed it's second affordable housing development in Billings, Southern Lights. Southern Lights offers twenty, 1-4 bedroom rental units that were built using energy efficient methods based on the needs expressed by the neighborhood. homeWORD also offers both Homebuyer Education and Financial Fitness classes that are open to the public on a year round basis. These classes help individuals address credit issues, create workable spending and savings plans, learn about the homebuying process, and learn how to properly maintain their home and build equity for the future. homeWORD staff also provide 1-1 housing counseling for anyone having difficulties resolving credit issues or facing problems with their mortgage.
History:
homeWORD began as a project of a Missoula based organization, Women's Opportunity and Resource Development/WORD, in 1994 and was incorporated as a 501(c)3 organization in 1998. Based in Missoula, homeWORD has maintained an office and services in Billings since 1999.
