The mission of the Peter Yegen Jr. Yellowstone County Museum is to collect, preserve, research and interpret the natural history, history and diverse cultures of the Yellowstone Valley of Montana and the Northern Plains. We share this legacy through a full range of exhibits and educational programs for the enrichment of the cultural and intellectual life of our community.
Description:
The Museum is housed in a log cabin located at the Billings Logan International Airport. The cabin has a Gift Shop and Lewis and Clark exhibit, in addition we have Landmarks Gallery on the same level and a large deck with a view of the valley. In the lower level is 4000 square feet of exhibit space. The Museum houses nearly 20,000 artifacts all from this region. Outside on the grounds are the Bill Hart statue and Old 1031, the last steam swith engine used in Billings.
History:
The Yellowstone County Museum was founded in 1953 by the Yellowstone Historical Society, Parmly Billings Library, the Pioneers of Eastern Montana, Yellowstone County, the City of Billings and local supporters. The Museum was renamed the Peter Yegen, Jr. Yellowstone County Museum in 1988 to honor Peter yegen, Jr. for his work in Preserving the history of the Yellowstone Valley. He along with Judge Harwood, Paul McCormick, Jr. , John Popovich, Dick Logan and others were instrumental in saving the log cabin that Paul McCormick originally built and is now the Museum.
