The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.

Providing the public with accurate, up-to-date information on cancer is a priority for the American Cancer Society. The Society provides information on all aspects of cancer through a toll-free information line, web site, and published materials. The Society publishes a large number of patient education brochures and pamphlets, books, and professional journals to help patients, families and health care professionals. History:
The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913 as the American Cancer Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC)by fifteen prominent physicians and business leaders in New York City. The founders and their colleagues set about writing articles for poplular magazines and professional journals, publishing Campaign Notes, a monthly bulletin of cancer information, and recuriting physicans throughout the country to help educate the public. In 1945, the ASCC was reorgaized as the American Cancer Society. The organization now consists of over 2 million volunteers working to conquer cancer.
