The St Vincent Healthcare Foster Grandparent Program provides opportunities for people aged 60 or older, to serve as classroom grandparents, mentoring children with special or exceptional needs. The program provides fulfilling mentoring opportunities for older adults who want to use their life experiences to make a difference in the lives of a child.

Description:
The Foster Grandparent Program is a national volunteer program that provides older Americans the opportunity to put their life experiences to work helping children in their communities. Foster Grandparent volunteers serve as “classroom grandparents” and serve as mentors to children with literacy or other special needs. Volunteers serve a minimum of 15 hours/week helping children one-on-one or with small groups on teacher assigned tasks. The program is open to older adults, 60+, who live on limited incomes. Income eligible volunteers receive a tax-free stipend of $2.65/hour, paid time off, paid holidays, supplemental liability insurance while serving, on-going training, and other benefits. As one Foster Grandparent said,” I love the program. It gives me a reason to get up in the morning. I feel that I’m doing something that will truly make an impact.”
Foster Grandparent volunteers become an important partner in the education of children.

History:
The St. Vincent Healthcare Foster Grandparent Program is one of three Senior Corps Programs sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The program was created nationally in 1965 as a response to the war on poverty and has been an active partner in our community since 1971. The program provides valuable aid to children and youth in elementary schools, Head Start Centers, after school programs, and non-profit day care centers.
