4-H is part of the Montana State University Extension Service. The 4-H mission is to educate youth and adults for living in a global world through experiential learning programs using the resources of the land-grant universities and USDA. 4-H provides a positive environment, a relationship with caring adults, and exciting educational experiences for youth.
Description:
4-H is a youth development program that teaches life skills. 4-H uses a variety of delivery methods such as clubs, special interest groups, activities, camps, enrichment programs and individual participation. 4-H is a family-centered program. 4-H is open to youth age 6-19. Members are involved in 4-H projects from aerospace to zoology. Over 65 projects are available. The 4-H program is carried out by salaried Extension staff, volunteers, teen leaders and members. There are 19 clubs located in a variety of locations around Yellowstone County. Members "learn by doing" in a hands-on environment.
History:
2002 was the 100th year of 4-H in the nation. After a century of inclusion and collaboration, 4-H spans the nation from family farms to urban environments. 4-H brings together youth and adults. 4-H members are still rooted in the historic base of rural America but, to the surprise of many, nearly 35% of today's 4-H youth live in the nations major urban centers and suburbs. 4-H builds confident, capable and caring citizens.
