Mission: To enhance human development through community STEP is a private, non-profit corporation designed to meet the needs of developmentally disabled children, adults, and their families.
Description:
STEP is a private, non-profit corporation designed to meet the needs of developmentally disabled children and their families. Funding for the organization has been made available through a contract with the Developmental Disabilities Division of the Department of Public Health and Human Services and other sources. STEP serves Region III of the State of Montana, which encompasses the most south-central eleven counties. The target population is children birth to 18 who are developmentally disabled or children ages birth through five years who have been determined to be “at risk”, and adults with disabilities. The major thrust of STEP is to prevent institutionalization of children who are developmentally disabled by providing education and support to the individual and/or the family. The end result of such services is intended to maintain individuals in their natural or foster homes or in some community setting and to nurture their positive growth and independence within the family. In addition, STEP works toward deinstitutionalizing individuals in state institutions or nursing homes by placing them back in the community in their natural homes, foster homes or in one of the corporation’s group homes.
