The Laurel Village Association (LVA) is a nonprofit community improvement organization based in the Laurel neighborhood of Oakland. We focus on a variety of issues including education, public safety, emergency preparedness, environmental enhancement, community development, and advocacy for public resources for the Laurel District. The Laurel Village Association also promotes the arts through an annual Summer Solstice Music Festival that features amateur and professional musicians performing for free at sites throughout the neighborhood.

Description:
The Laurel Village Association provides environmental enhancement through the planting of trees and plants, adoption of medians and 580 freeway on and off ramps, the restoration of Peralta Creek, an urban waterway in the neighborhood, and graffiti abatement. The Association promotes public safety through participation in the National Neighbors Night Out, neighborhood watches, neighborhood walks, participation in anti-crime programs. The Laurel Village Association works with Laurel Elementary School to promote education issues and improve the physical plant of the school. The LVA also advocates for responsible community development and for the development of a Laurel based public library and park. The LVA also produces an annual Summer Solstice Music Festival that is free to the pubic and includes a exhibition of Laurel based visual artists.

History:
The Laurel village Association was formed in December 2005 to improve the quality of life in the Laurel neighborhood of Oakland, California. The organization is designed to serve anyone who lives, works, shops or plays in the Laurel neighborhood. It also works to improve the overall quality of life in the city of Oakland. The organization is governed by a ten member board of directors, all of whom reside in the Laurel and donate their time and services. On March 17, 2007, the LVA was notified of its tax exempt status from the IRS.
