| Last updated on February 4, 2008 |
Oasis High School was founded in 2004 to provide an alternative high school opportunity for young people who are motivated to finish high school regardless of their past academic experiences.
Description:
Oasis High School, located in downtown Oakland, is a public charter school founded to address the needs of some of the hundreds of young people in Oakland who are dropping out of local high schools each year. Oasis provides a small school environment with dedicated teachers and involved parents.
In the words of one of our students..."To me, Oasis High School is a great school to come to and study, if you really want to get yourself together. Teachers really take the time to teach you and to help you." Oasis is seeking volunteers to bring more adults into the life of the school to provide more personal and academic support for our students.
History:
Oasis High School was founded by a group of educators and youth worker, parents and young people interested in creating an alternative high school experience. Oasis enrolls about 150 students in grades 9-12. Each student takes the classes he/she needs to complete their high school diploma. In addition to taking required academics, students enroll in a variety of arts courses including poetry, drama, music and visual arts. All students are encouraged and introduced to opportunities to continue their education beyond high school. Oasis is located in downtown Oakland to take advantage of the civic and cultural resources within a few blocks walk of the school.
