Last updated on July 8, 2008

The Richmond Art Center promotes the visual arts with education and exhibitions in the Richmond area.

Description:
The Art center was founded by Hazel Salmi in 1936 and began as an arts and crafts school for the Richmond area. It was a division of the City’s Recreation and Parks Department until 1979 when Proposition 13 cuts forced it to become the sole responsibility of the Board of Directors. Today the Richmond Art Center operates in partnership with the City of Richmond to offer programs in the areas of Education, Outreach and providing Exhibition space in the form of 4 galleries to promote the visual arts. Classes are offered on site for adults and children and artist/teachers are sent out into the school system to work with kids, to build self esteem and promote creativity. A wide variety of arts and crafts are taught including: jewelry making, sculpting, ceramics painting, textile arts such as weaving. Exhibitions are changed 4 times a year which showcase emerging, local artists of all ages and the well established artists of the Bay area. Public lectures, tours, festivals and artist talks are also provided.

History:
We are in our 70th year and still going strong. The Richmond Art Center is a non-profit that relies on volunteers to maintain our high quality programs and exhibitions. Come be part of history by contributing to the arts.
